Rules & Regulations

GENERAL RULES FOR ALL RAFTS:
  1. Each participant must be 18 years or older.
  2. All participants MUST sign a waiver form (included in the entry application) and this MUST be handed in to the Sourdough raft Race Association prior to race day.
  3. Each participant MUST wear an M.O.T. approved flotation device throughout the race.
  4. Rafts must carry a noisemaker (ie. a whistle or airhorn) and flashlight.
  5. All entries are responsible for their own raft construction, crew and transportation to and from race sites.
  6. The removal of the raft rubbish and the raft itself are the rafter’s responsibility.
  7. It is an offense to carry or consume alcoholic beverages in the City Parks and on the river. The Edmonton police or RCMP will ticket violators. PLEASE TAKE NOTE THAT TERWILLEGAR PARK, RAFTER’S LANDING AND THE RIVER ARE PATROLLED ALL DAY SUNDAY.
  8. Every raft MUST HAVE a red emergency “flag.” This flag shall only be used if said raft needs immediate assistance. If the emergency flag is used frivolously, the offending raft will be IMMEDIATELY DISQUALIFIED.
  9. New Numbers will be issued on Raft Day and MUST be attached on both sides of the raft.

RAFT EVENT
In addition to the above rules and regulations the following also apply:
  1. For safety reasons, water balloons, slingshots, cannons, catapults, pressure pumps and hoses are prohibited. Any such equipment found on the person or raft will be confiscated. This will result in immediate and automatic disqualification from any prizes or awards. Squirt guns and other such “toys” are more than welcome.
  2. Bailers (ie. a bucket) are required on each raft.
  3. Rafts must carry a rope ladder to get back on the raft if the vessel is over 21 ft.
  4. For lift and placement at Terwillegar and removal at Rafter’s Landing, eyehooks are required. There shall be an eyehook fastened at each corner of the raft so that they will support the weight of the completed raft. Please remember that your raft will take on a significant amount of water weight. The eyehooks should have a minimum 1” hole. (Round rod or equivalent mechanisms may be considered acceptable at the discretion of the raft Inspection Committee). Without adequate eyehooks you WILL NOT RECEIVE CRANE SERVICE.
  5. The maximum size permitted is 12’ wide by 24’ long. Any oversized rafts that were entered in previous years will be allowed. Please know the weight of your raft as this will assist in the speed and safety of crane service. DON’T FORGET TO CHECK WITH THE EDMONTON TRANSPORTATION DEPARTMENT FOR INFORMATION REGARDING THE PILOT VEHICLE!
  6. For docking purposes each raft must have an attached 100’ nylon or polypropelylene rope of sufficient strength to hold said raft.
  7. Motors are permitted and we HIGHLY SUGGEST one be installed.
